The Pocahontas County Warriors scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Wednesday. They blew past Tygarts Valley 62-34 at home. For those curious, yes, that was the biggest win Pocahontas County has managed all season.
Pocahontas County's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Olivia Vandevender, who scored 16 points along with six assists and three steals. That's the first time this season that Vandevender scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Shayla Bennett, who scored ten points along with eight rebounds and five steals.
Despite the loss, Tygarts Valley saw an underclassman step up: Sarah Defibaugh scored 18 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Another player making a difference was Summer Lewis-Smith, who scored two points along with six rebounds.
The win got Pocahontas County back to even at 3-3. As for Tygarts Valley, their defeat was their eighth straight on the road dating back to last season, which bumped their record down to 2-5.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Pocahontas County will challenge Greenbrier West at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Tygarts Valley will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against Clay-Battelle at 6:30 p.m. on January 5th. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in West Virginia (Clay-Battelle is ranked 96th, while Tygarts Valley is ranked 110th).
