Richlands and South Lenoir are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2016, but likely not for long. The Wildcats will square off against the Blue Devils at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Richlands has given up an average of 8.7 runs per game this season, but Wednesday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
White Oak hit Richlands with a five-run seventh inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Wildcats came up short against the Vikings, falling 14-5.
Richlands saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kenly Harris, who went 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. That triple was Harris' first of the season. Another was Kayleigh Lawson, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for South Lenoir, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Friday. They put the hurt on Clinton with a sharp 11-2 win on Tuesday. The result was nothing new for the Blue Devils, who have now won three matchups by nine runs or more so far this season.
Lily Cole and Carley Boone did most of the damage at the plate: Cole went 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Boone went 2-for-3 with three runs, one double, and one RBI. Makenzie Herring was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
South Lenoir hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.
South Lenoir has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 5-3 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.6 runs over those games. As for Richlands, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-9.
Richlands might still be hurting after the 12-2 loss they got from South Lenoir in their previous meeting back in February. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
