Central and Calexico are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2020, but not for long. The Central Spartans will challenge the Calexico Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Central has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
Last Friday, Central didn't have too much trouble with Southwest EC as they won 71-52. The win continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Eagles: they've now won nine in a row.
Central got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was David Lopez out in front who went 7 for 16 to rack up 19 points. Daimaggio Wyatt was another key player, dropping a double-double on 17 points and 16 boards.
Central smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive board total in three consecutive matches.
Meanwhile, Calexico sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 65-62 win over Vincent Memorial on Thursday.
Calexico found their leader in sophomore Edgar Mendoza, who posted 26 points and five assists. The dominant performance gave Mendoza a new career-high in assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Dany Carreon, who had eight points along with ten rebounds and six assists.
Central's record now sits at 13-10. As for Calexico, their record now sits at 16-8.
Wednesday's contest will pit two of the most dominant forwards against one another: Wyatt and Carreon. Wyatt has been dynamite this season: he has averaged 16 points, 1.6 steals, and 7.6 boards on 50.5% shooting. For his part, Carreon has averaged 15.4 points, 1.7 steals, and 6.9 rebounds.
Central and Calexico were neck-and-neck when the teams last played back in January, but Central came up empty-handed after a 47-46 defeat. Can Central avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
