The Athens Academy Spartans will head out on the road to face off against the Columbia Eagles at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Friday, Athens Academy really took it to East Jackson for the full four quarters, racking up a 59-21 victory at home. The match was all but wrapped up at the end of the third, by which point Athens Academy had established a 25 point advantage.
Athens Academy can attribute much of their success to Jeremiah Wingfield, who rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown, and Jamari Welch, who rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown on only 15 carries. Wingfield hasn't dropped below 100 rushing yards for three straight games. Keyon Standifer made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.
Meanwhile, Columbia entered their tilt with Towers with three consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with four. Columbia took their contest on the road on Friday with ease, bagging a 33-6 victory over Towers. Given Columbia's advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 166th, while Towers is ranked 417th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Columbia got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Lamaze Williams out in front who rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries. Cameron Graves also helped out as he racked up 100 rushing yards.
Their wins bumped Athens Academy to 6-4 and Columbia to 7-3.
