Basketball Recap: Johnny Mayers Ii's Big Game Can't Quite Lead North Star Academy over Newark Tech

North Star Academy lost against Newark Tech back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Saturday. North Star Academy took a 69-57 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Newark Tech Terries. While losing is never fun, North Star Academy can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Jersey basketball rankings (they are ranked 294th, while Newark Tech is ranked 64th).

North Star Academy's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Johnny Mayers Ii, who went 7 for 17 on his way to 19 points and three steals. Mayers Ii's afternoon made it seven games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Elton Ngoy was another key player, putting up ten points and seven boards.

North Star Academy's defeat was their third straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 4-8. As for Newark Tech, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 9-2 record this season.

North Star Academy won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Trenton Central at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. North Star Academy is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.5 points per game this season. As for Newark Tech, they also won't have to wait long for more action: they'll square off against The Pingry School at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday. Newark Tech is facing The Pingry School at the right time seeing as The Pingry School is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
