The Medina Mustangs will take on the Oneonta Yellowjackets at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Medina 0.8, Oneonta 3) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Medina is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They walked away with a 5-1 victory over Haverling. The win was familiar territory for the Mustangs, who have now won five games in a row.
Preston Woodworth made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Woodworth was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Vinny Gray was excellent, going 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in May. Another player making a difference was Aidan Papaj, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases and one run.
Medina always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .529. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Haverling only posted an OBP of .160.
Meanwhile, Oneonta got the win against Bishop Ludden on Tuesday by a conclusive 14-4. The result was nothing new for the Yellowjackets, who have now won nine matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
Like Medina, Oneonta also got a great game from a two-way player: Nolan Stark. He struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk). Stark has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Maddox Imperato, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Chase Jervis was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Medina's record is now 20-2. As for Oneonta, their record now sits at 16-5.
Saturday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Medina has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .483. However, it's not like Oneonta struggles in that department as they've averaged .461. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
