Marquez has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Walnut Mustangs at 9:00 a.m. on Monday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Marquez scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Friday. They blew past Maywood Academy 92-48 at home. With Marquez ahead 56-29 at the half, the contest was all but over already.
Marquez relied on the efforts of Julian Nunez, who scored 27 points along with four steals, and Lamont White Jr, who almost dropped a triple-double on 19 points, nine assists, and 11 steals. That's the first time this season that White Jr posted eight or more assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Elyjah Staples, who scored ten points along with nine rebounds and five assists.
Meanwhile, Walnut entered their tilt with Bellflower with ten consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with 11. Walnut came out on top against Bellflower by a score of 62-53 on Saturday. Given Walnut's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 228th, while Bellflower is ranked 556th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Marquez is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season. As for Walnut, their victory was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 16-5.
