The Mount Vernon Mustangs had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 30.7 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Saturday. They walked away with a 60-49 win over Flint Hill. The win was all the more spectacular given Mount Vernon's disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 51st in Georgia, while Flint Hill is ranked fourth in Virginia).
Leading Mount Vernon to victory were Xavier Shegog and Kj Garris. Shegog dropped a double-double on 18 points and 12 rebounds, while Garris scored 29 points along with six rebounds. Shegog hasn't dropped below 15points for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Sha'yah Goba, who scored nine points along with five rebounds.
Mount Vernon's victory was their 12th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 12-7. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 70.2 points per game. As for Flint Hill, they have traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 9-5 record this season.
Mount Vernon will face off against Greenforest at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. One thing working in Greenforest's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last six matches. Flint Hill will be staying on the road on Monday to face off against Sandy Creek at 1:30 p.m. on January 15th. Sandy Creek is coming into the contest hot, having won their last four games.
