Houston hasn't had much luck against Southland recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Hurricanes will venture away from home to challenge the Rebels at 4:30 p.m. Houston is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7 runs per game this season.
On Saturday, Houston came up short against Hayfield and fell 8-3.
Zach Olson was cooking despite his team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one run and one double. Grayden Beckman was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Meanwhile, Southland waltzed into their match on Friday with six straight wins... but they left with seven. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Cougars an 8-0 shutout. The Rebels might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by seven runs or more this season.
Cole Miller was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over seven innings pitched. Miller was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
In other batting news, Southland let Landon Hill and Austin Swenson run wild. Hill went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double, while Swenson went 3-for-5 with one run and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Maverick Hanna, who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Southland was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .400. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .321 or higher in four consecutive games.
Southland pushed their record up to 12-3 with the victory, which was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Houston, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-9.
Houston couldn't quite get it done against Southland when the teams last played back in April as they fell 7-4. Can the Hurricanes avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
