Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2024 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence in addition to local and state accolades.
Cameron Dyer of
La Cueva (Albuquerque) is the 2024 MaxPreps New Mexico High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound senior quarterback led the Bears to a 12-1 record and the Class 6A state championship game.
Dyer entered the title game with 2,361 passing yards and 30 touchdowns to go with 1,360 yards on the ground and 20 more scores. He was limited in that contest after suffering a knee injury in a 47-19 win over Las Cruces in the semifinals, accounting for 121 yards of total offense with a TD pass in a 26-8 loss to Cleveland (Rio Rancho).

Against Pinnacle (Phoenix, Ariz.) in September, Dyer led La Cueva to an improbable 39-32 win in double overtime. Trailing 25-10 in the final minute, he scored on a 76-yard run and after the Bears recovered an onside kick and scored again, he threw for a two-point conversion to tie the game at 25.
In overtime, he threw and ran for scores to give La Cueva the win, accounting for 348 yards of total offense and four touchdowns.
One of Dyer's best performances came in a 63-31 win over Los Lunas in October, completing 25 of 36 passes for 376 yards and seven touchdowns to go with 68 yards rushing and another score.
In a 57-6 win over Hobbs in the state quarterfinals, Dyer accounted for 413 yards of total offense and six touchdowns.
Dyer led La Cueva to 22 consecutive wins leading up to the state championship game. He was named the 2023 MaxPreps New Mexico Player of the Year after throwing for 2,402 yards and 23 touchdowns to go with 1,359 yards rushing and 23 more scores.
According to
247Sports, Dyer is the top prospect in the state and among the top 150 nationally. He committed to Arizona State in June and signed his letter of intent earlier today.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team.
