Somersworth and Newport are an even 4-4 against one another since November of 2015, but not for long. The Somersworth Toppers will take on the Newport Tigers at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Somersworth walked away with it. Everything went their way against Raymond on Friday as Somersworth made off with a 28-8 win. The victory was familiar territory for Somersworth who now have five in a row.
Somersworth had a senior duo take command as Tayshawn Sheppard gained 169 total yards and three touchdowns and Kaden Bickford rushed for 174 yards and a touchdown while picking up 7.9 yards per carry.
On the other side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Somersworth's defense and their ten sacks. It was a group effort, with four guys contributing.
Meanwhile, Newport put another one in the bag on Saturday to keep their perfect season alive. They claimed a resounding 35-7 win over Bishop Brady at home.
Somersworth has yet to lose a match at home this season, leaving them with a 7-1 record. They've been dominating during the matchups in that stretch too, as they've won by an average of 40.11 points. As for Newport, their victory bumped their record up to 8-0.
Somersworth and Newport were almost perfectly matched up when the teams last played back in September, but Somersworth suffered an agonizing 13-12 defeat. Can Somersworth avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
