The Astoria Fishermen are taking a road trip to take on the St. Helens Lions at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Astoria 3.1, St. Helens 2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Astoria will head out to face St. Helens after giving up their first home loss of the season on Thursday. The Fishermen fell just short of Scappoose by a score of 3-2.
Astoria saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hailey Svensen, who went 1-for-5 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, St. Helens entered their tilt with Seaside on Thursday with six consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with seven. They never let the Seagulls get on the board and left with a 13-0 win. The Lions might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matches by six runs or more this season.
Eme Curaming was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out six over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in six consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Jadyn Pense and Addy Ellis did most of the damage at the plate: Pense went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI, while Ellis went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Those two hits gave Pense a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Maddy Lahey, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
St. Helens' victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-1. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.0 runs over those games. As for Astoria, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 10-3-1.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Astoria hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .317. However, it's not like St. Helens struggles in that department as they've averaged .363. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Astoria came out on top in a nail-biter against St. Helens in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, sneaking past 2-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Fishermen since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
