The Moreno Valley Vikings will square off against the Citrus Hill Hawks at 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Moreno Valley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.
Last Thursday, Moreno Valley earned a 9-5 victory over Lakeside.
Alexys Vasquez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Mia Licon, who went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Lia Sandoval, who scored two runs and stole three bases while going 1-for-3.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Citrus Hill). They put the hurt on Rancho Christian with a sharp 20-1 win on Thursday. The victory was familiar territory for the Hawks, who have now won three games in a row.
Taylor Macaulay made a splash while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Macaulay was also solid in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing a base while getting on base in all three of her plate appearances. Those three runs gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Citrus Hill got a massive performance out of Tatum Pino, who went 2-for-3 with five RBI, two doubles, and one run. Those five RBI gave Pino a new career-high. Alyssa Lupercio was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-2.
Citrus Hill always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .727. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Moreno Valley's win bumped their record up to 5-7. As for Citrus Hill, their victory bumped their record up to 8-4.
Citrus Hill's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Moreno Valley has been making plenty of contact this season, having averaged 9.9 hits per game. It's a different story for Citrus Hill, though, as they've been averaging 11.2 hits. Given Moreno Valley's sizable advantage in that area, the Hawks will need to find a way to close that gap.
Moreno Valley took their win against Citrus Hill in their previous meeting back in February of 2022 by a conclusive 22-0 score. Will the Vikings repeat their success, or do the Hawks have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
