Given Umatilla's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 185th, while Lake Weir is ranked 463rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Umatilla to victory, but perhaps none more so than Herly Brutus, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds. Brutus is absolutely dominating the rebound category: he's posted at least eight every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Jalen Pressley, who scored 12 points along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Lake Weir lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Tra'shawn Warren, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and four steals. Warren has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last four times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Amari Kiner, who scored nine points along with five rebounds and three steals.
Umatilla is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten matches, which provided a nice bump to their 16-3 record this season. As for Lake Weir, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-10.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Umatilla will face off against Belleview at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Lake Weir won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against South Sumter at 7:30 p.m. on January 24th.
