Basketball Recap: Mt. Vernon Snags Fifth Win in Last Six Games

If Yorktown wanted to avenge their loss from the last time they played Mt. Vernon, they should've done a better job of containing Luke Ertel. The Mt. Vernon Marauders walked away with a 51-38 victory over the Yorktown Tigers on Friday thanks in part to Ertel, who posted 20 points and six boards. The match was his sixth in a row with at least 20 points.

Yorktown's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jabin Barnes, who shot 56% from the field on his way to 13 points and seven rebounds. Barnes is on a roll when it comes to shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 56% in the last four games he's played. Another player making a difference was Nate Tyler, who scored 12 points.

Mt. Vernon is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 17-5 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.3 points over those games. Yorktown has been struggling recently as they've lost nine of their last ten games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-16 record this season.

Mt. Vernon and Yorktown are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Mt. Vernon will face off against Richmond at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Mt. Vernon is facing Richmond at the right time seeing as Richmond is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Yorktown, they will challenge Jay County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
