AAA District 2 recap Oct. 23, 2012
Nick Sexton and Corey Heard provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Cherokee. The connection was good for 82 yards, the longest such play in AAA District 2 this season.
Sevier County extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating South-Doyle, 33-6. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Smoky Bears.
Seymour's dynamic duo of Sexton and Heard proved tough for the Chiefs to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Sexton threw for 172 yards and one touchdown and Heard had 107 yards receiving. Chris Grimo helped Seymour's passing attack out by catching three balls for 41 yards.
Jocquez Bruce was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 13 carries, he ran for 93 yards as the Cherokees lost to Cherokee. Caleb Mitchell also contributed to the rushing game with 19 yards on the ground.
Seymour's Sexton and DJ Griffin have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading AAA District 2 in both passing and receiving yards. Sexton has thrown for 1781 yards this season, while Griffin, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 43 catches for 681 yards. South-Doyle's Bruce leads the league in rushing yards with 710.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when Clark Duncan's team takes on Jefferson County. At the moment, the Cherokees are in second, while the Patriots are in third.
The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when South-Doyle takes on Jefferson County. The Cherokees have allowed 92 points this season, while the Patriots have given up 118. South-Doyle allowed 33 points last week as it fell to Sevier County.
Mike Sivert's team made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 2,111 from 2,602. The advance stemmed from a 54-6 victory over Jim Moore's team last week.
