Ashley and Hoggard are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2019, but likely not for long. The Screaming Eagle will face off against the Vikings at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Ashley is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.1 runs per game this season.
Ashley's pitching crew heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. They came out on top against New Hanover by a score of 5-0. The win continues a trend for the Screaming Eagle in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won four in a row.
The result came thanks to Cane Mehling's shutout, as he gave up just a hit and racked up six Ks. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Quinn Bentley, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Hoggard fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Laney on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Buccaneers by a score of 5-4. The Vikings have struggled against the Buccaneers recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.
Hoggard saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brandon Bush, who went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Jonah Harker was another, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run.
Ashley pushed their record up to 17-4 with the victory, which was their seventh straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.4 runs over those games. As for Hoggard, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-15.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Ashley has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Hoggard struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Ashley beat Hoggard 6-3 when the teams last played back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Screaming Eagle since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
