The Glencoe Yellowjackets came tearing into Tuesday's match with four straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 19.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on Gaston with a sharp 51-30 win. Given Glencoe's advantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 158th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 398th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Glencoe found their leader in underclassman Kinlee Montgomery, who scored 19 points along with four steals. Montgomery has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last ten times she's played. Another player making a difference was Libby King, who scored five points along with two steals.
Glencoe is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 18-9 record this season. As for Gaston, they are on a six-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-17.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Glencoe is on the road again on Thursday and plays the Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on February 1st. Winterboro is on a four-game streak of home wins, the Yellowjackets a three-game streak of away wins -- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. As for Gaston, they will head out on the road to challenge the Wildcats at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Sand Rock is coming into the matchup hot, having won their last four games.
