Burges and Chapin are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2022, but likely not for long. The Mustangs will square off against the Huskies at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Burges will bounce into Friday's game after beating El Paso, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Mustangs won by a run and slipped past the Tigers 3-2. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Mustangs.
Victor Aguirre made a big impact no matter where he played. He pitched six innings while giving up just two earned runs off nine hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Aguirre wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Evan Rodriguez, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run.
Meanwhile, Chapin made easy work of Andress on Tuesday and carried off a 16-1 victory. The result was nothing new for the Huskies, who have now won nine matchups by eight runs or more so far this season.
Like Burges, Chapin also got a great game from a two-way player: Izayah Carrasco. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. That's the most strikeouts Carrasco has posted since back in February. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs.
In other batting news, Bryan Cordero and Nathan Hurtado did most of the damage at the plate: Cordero went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs, while Hurtado went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two doubles, and one run. Those two doubles gave Hurtado a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Nathan Sanchez, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.
Chapin lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Burges' record is now 11-13-2. As for Chapin, their record now sits at 15-11-1.
Burges beat Chapin 6-2 in their previous meeting on April 2nd. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mustangs since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
