5A Region I District 7 recap September 17, 2013
Jeremiah Drake and Devante Smith provided fans with a highlight when they connected against Horn. The longest such play in 5A Region I District 7 this season, the connection resulted in 71 yards.
Mansfield Timberview was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after beating Arlington. The Wolves came in at 21 in the state poll after placing at number 49 last week.
Desmon White put up the best numbers through the air as DeSoto defeated Trinity. He finished with a total of 23 completions for 364 yards and 5 touchdowns. White's favorite target this week was Kevin Thomas, who caught 9 passes for 140 yards.
Smith was the best wideout in the league this week as Duncanville lost to the Jaguars. Smith tallied 11 receptions for 147 yards. Kevin Bell Jr. helped Duncanville's passing attack out by catching 5 balls for 79 yards.
Derrell Haynes was the most successful running back in the league this week. He ran for 143 yards on 17 carries as the Panthers lost to Horn. Drake also contributed to the rushing game with 43 yards on the ground.
Duncanville's Drake and Smith have formed a dream team this season, leading 5A Region I District 7 in both passing and receiving yards. 5-10 quarterback Drake has thrown for 945 yards this season, while Smith has 27 catches for 306 yards. Victor Williams from Midlothian leads the league in rushing with 357 yards.
The marquee game in the league this week will be the clash between Cedar Hill and the Eagles. The Longhorns enters the contest ranked ninth in the state, while DeSoto ranks second.
Fans will be thrilled by an exciting game in the secondary when Jeff Dicus' team's Smith goes up against the Panthers' E J Muhammad.
Next week's game between the Panthers and Midlothian will feature a good passing match up as Drake will test his arm against Muhammad's defensive ability.
Mansfield Timberview scaled the state rankings by moving to 21 from 49 this week, the biggest jump in the league. James Brown's team was able to make move up by defeating the Colts 37-3.
