Springfield and Rochester are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2018, but likely not for long. The Senators will take on the Rockets at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The last three games Springfield has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
Springfield will face Rochester after dropping another heartbreaker against Sacred Heart-Griffin on Saturday, which marked the second time in a row the team's come within 2.1 of beating them. The Senators fell just short of the Cyclones by a score of 6-5. The Senators have struggled against the Cyclones recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost meeting.
Brody Scheffler made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Wade Snyder, who went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Rochester had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 13 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Friday. They came out on top against the Panthers by a score of 8-5.
Ajay Runkel made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one home run and three RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, Sam Ferris was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one home run. Landen Kerns also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.
Rochester pushed their record up to 18-7 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Springfield, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-16.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Springfield has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 8.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Rochester struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Springfield beat Rochester 5-1 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Senators since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
