The Mt. Vernon Marauders are taking a road trip to square off against the Harrison Raiders at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. Mt. Vernon is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9 runs per game this season.
Shelbyville hit Mt. Vernon with a four-run third inning on Wednesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Marauders took a 7-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Golden Bears. The Marauders have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Mason Meyer was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. That home run was his first of the season.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Harrison, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the squad sidled past Danville 5-3.
Colton Watts looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over four innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Harrison is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 0-4 otherwise.
At the plate, Jaden Diehl was excellent, going 1-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. Kendrick Pena was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Mt. Vernon's loss dropped their record down to 5-3. As for Harrison, their record now sits at 3-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mt. Vernon has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Harrison struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Mt. Vernon's way against Harrison when the teams last played back in April of 2023, as Mt. Vernon made off with a 15-5 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Marauders since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
