The Boulder Panthers will square off against the Mountain Range Mustangs at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Boulder is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.8 runs per game this season.
Brighton hit Boulder with a seven-run fourth inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Panthers fell 8-5 to the Bulldogs.
Boulder got a good showing from Bennett Levinson, who pitched 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Levinson has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Finn Torvik was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Sam Skubic, who went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Mountain Range can bid farewell to their three-game losing streak thanks to their game on Tuesday. They were the clear victors by a 10-2 margin over Westminster. Considering the Mustangs have won six games by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Shane Frahm made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out 13 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits. Those 13 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. Mountain Range is undefeated when Frahm posts two or more runs, but 4-10 otherwise.
In other batting news, Cameron Williams was excellent, going 3-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March. Sol Gutierrez was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Mountain Range kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 5-2 when they post 11 or more hits.
Boulder dropped their record down to 9-5 with the defeat, which was their third straight at home. Those home losses can't be blamed on the team's hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Mountain Range, their win bumped their record up to 7-10.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Thursday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Boulder has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mountain Range struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 7.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Boulder beat Mountain Range 7-2 in their previous matchup back in March. Will the Panthers repeat their success, or do the Mustangs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
