Ansonia (Conn.) scored 28 points in the first quarter to secure a big 48-6 victory over Derby (Conn.) on Saturday.
The Chargers scored on a
Andrew Matos touchdown run, a touchdown run by Matos, a
Arkeel Newsome touchdown run and a touchdown pass by
JaiQuan McKnight to
Raeshaun Finney in the quarter.
Ansonia was up 41-0 at the half after taking the lead on a Matos touchdown run in the first quarter.
AHS expanded its lead to 42 points entering the fourth quarter. The Chargers scored once in the quarter on a touchdown run by
Ephrain Collins.
The the Chargers raced to 28 in the first quarter alone and never looked back.
McKnight played well for AHS in the victory. The sophomore running back threw two touchdowns and ran for one touchdown. He has now scored four touchdowns on the season.
The Red Raiders' Tyraee Small played well. The junior running back ran for one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to two on the year.
Derby's lone touchdown came on a 76-yard run by Small in the third quarter.
The Chargers also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 58-19.
The defeat comes as a step back for Derby, which notched a 21-20 victory over Naugatuck in its previous outing. The loss snapped DHS's 2-game winning streak. With the win Ansonia extended its winning streak to four games.
Ansonia (4-0) will play a non-conference game against Holy Cross next week, while Derby (2-1) will take on Wilby in a Naugatuck Valley - Brass game.
