The Discovery Canyon Thunder have been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. The game between Discovery Canyon and Lutheran wasn't particularly close, with Discovery Canyon falling 62-43. While losing is never fun, Discovery Canyon can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 83rd, while Lutheran is ranked 13th).
Despite the defeat, Discovery Canyon saw an underclassman step up: Hugh Tarpenning scored 21 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. Tarpenning has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last six times he's played. Another player making a difference was Noah Eckles, who scored six points.
Lutheran had a senior duo take command as Braydon Jacob scored 20 points along with two steals and Hunter Caldwell scored 15 points along with three steals. Jacob hasn't dropped below 15points for four straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Kade Speckman, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds and three blocks.
Discovery Canyon's defeat ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-5. As for Lutheran, the win (which was their 12th in a row) raised their record to 12-2.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Discovery Canyon will take on Cheyenne Mountain at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Cheyenne Mountain has now lost seven straight, and the team is hunting for their first win since December 12. As for Lutheran, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Lewis-Palmer at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Lewis-Palmer knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past five matches -- so hopefully Lutheran likes a good challenge.
