Yorktown and Jay County are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2015, but not for long. The Yorktown Tigers will look to defend their home court on Saturday against the Jay County Patriots at 7:30 p.m. Hopefully Yorktown is not getting complacent considering they own a much higher rank in Indiana (they are ranked 85th, while Jay County is ranked 237th).
Yorktown pushed their score all the way to 57 last Thursday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 64-57 hit to the loss column at the hands of Pendleton Heights.
Despite the loss, Yorktown had strong showings from Nate Tyler, who scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and five assists, and Kieran Tewari, who scored 16 points. It was the first time this season that Tyler scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Jabin Barnes, who scored seven points.
Meanwhile, Jay County entered their tilt with Southern Wells with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. Jay County strolled past Southern Wells with points to spare last Thursday, taking the game 53-39. Winning is a bit easier when you work as a team to rack up seven more assists than your opponent, as Jay County did.
Jay County's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Liam Garringer, who scored seven points along with six assists and six steals. Garringer hasn't dropped below two steals for eight straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Wesley Bihn, who scored 11 points along with six rebounds.
Something new happened last Thursday as Jayden Comer saw his first action of the season, playing 15 minutes against Southern Wells. Comer made the most of the opportunity, scoring eight points along with three steals. A few more games like that and he might be seeing even more time going forward.
Yorktown's defeat was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 10-8. As for Jay County, their victory bumped their record up to 7-9.
Yorktown beat Jay County 51-44 in their previous meeting back in February of 2023. Will Yorktown repeat their success, or does Jay County have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
