Wakefield is 9-1 against Knightdale since April of 2019 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Wolverines will head out on the road to square off against the Knights at 5:00 p.m. Wakefield will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak.
Wakefield proved they can win big on Wednesday (they won by 11) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They won by a run and slipped past Heritage 3-2.
Garrett Ransom tossed a big game, tossing six innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk in seven consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Wakefield's victory was truly a team effort as four different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Eli Gross, who went 1-for-2 with one run.
Meanwhile, Knightdale got their first taste of in-conference action on Saturday and they started things off strong. They put the hurt on Rolesville with a sharp 16-5 win. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Knights considering their one-run performance the contest before.
Bryson Irvin was a standout: he got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in February. The team also got some help courtesy of Tylen Harris, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
Knightdale was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Rolesville only posted a batting average of .238.
Wakefield's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 18-3. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.5 runs on average over those games. As for Knightdale, their victory ended an eight-game drought on the road and puts them at 6-14.
Knightdale's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Monday. Wakefield has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.6 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Knightdale, though, as they've been averaging only 4.2 strikeouts. Will Wakefield keep running through batters, or will the Knights buck the trend?
Wakefield took their win against Knightdale in their previous matchup back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 14-0 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Wolverines since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
