Basketball Game Preview: Shawnee Indians vs. Elida Bulldogs

Shawnee has gone 9-1 against Elida recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Indians will take on the Bulldogs in a holiday battle at 7:30 p.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Shawnee has three straight victories, Elida has seven straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the court.

Shawnee is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They claimed a resounding 97-39 win over Kenton. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 53-33.

Shawnee relied on the efforts of Trevick Bertke, who went 11-for-13 on his way to 23 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists, and Beckett Bertke, who shot 52% from the field en route to 27 points in addition to six assists and three steals. The matchup was Trevick's 18th in a row with at least 15 points. Greyson McDonald was another key player, putting up eight points in addition to seven steals and five assists.

They weren't the only ones working in the assist department: Shawnee was working as a unit and finished the game with 35 assists. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their assist total in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Elida suffered their closest loss since January 18th on Tuesday. They fell just short of Allen East by a score of 43-41. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 328th, while the Mustangs are ranked 69th).

Elida's defeat dropped their record down to 0-6. As for Shawnee, their victory bumped their record up to 3-1.

Everything came up roses for Shawnee against Elida in their previous meeting back in November, as the team secured a 79-50 win. Will the Indians repeat their success, or do the Bulldogs have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
