The George Washington Patriots will head out on the road to square off against the Montbello Warriors at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday. George Washington is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.1 runs per game this season.
George Washington is coming in off a wild two-game stretch: after soaring to 20 runs on Thursday, they were much more limited against Vista PEAK Prep on Saturday. They fell just short of the Bison by a score of 2-1. The matchup marked the Patriots' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
George Washington saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Adrian Reed, who went 1-for-3 with one run.
Meanwhile, Montbello got their first taste of in-conference action on Saturday and they started things off strong. They were the clear victors by a 14-1 margin over Rangeview.
Nicolas Torres made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 12 over five innings pitched. Those 12 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged two or more in each of the last three games he's played.
In other batting news, Santiago Nava was a standout: he went 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. He has become a key player for Montbello: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 2-11 otherwise. Derek Alvidrez was another key player, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with four RBI and one double.
Montbello kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.2 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 games they've averaged 10.
George Washington now has a losing record of 7-8. As for Montbello, their record now sits at 6-12.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. George Washington has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 9.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Montbello struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.4 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
