The Marcos de Niza Padres's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their 17th straight loss. They had to suffer through a rough 84-20 loss at the hands of Seton Catholic. While losing is never fun, Marcos de Niza can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 280th, while Seton Catholic is ranked 14th).
Despite the loss, Marcos de Niza saw an underclassman step up: Elyanna Carbajal scored four points along with seven rebounds and three steals. That's the first time this season that Carbajal grabbed two or more steals.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Marcos de Niza struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only four offensive rebounds. They were crushed by their opponents in that department as Seton Catholic pulled down 16 offensive rebounds.
Carmella Gallardo continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines for Seton Catholic, dropping a double-double on 23 points and 13 steals. Jaydan Herrera was another key contributor, scoring 23 points.
Marcos de Niza's loss was their 18th straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 2-20. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 14.4 points per game. As for Seton Catholic, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 11 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 18-6 record this season.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Marcos de Niza will take on Saguaro at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. Hopefully Saguaro focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up eight last Thursday. As for Seton Catholic, Seton Catholic and St. Mary's will face off at 7:00 p.m. on January 29th without much rest after finishing up games yesterday.
