The Washington County Panthers are still undefeated this season after their contest against the Bertie Falcons on Friday, but the Bertie Falcons came as close as anyone has to beating them. Washington County had just enough and edged Bertie out 45-42. Despite the win, that was the fewest points Washington County has scored all year.
Brandon Carter Jr. continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, dropping a double-double on 21 points and ten rebounds. Carter Jr. is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Amari Chesson, who scored eight points along with five rebounds and four steals.
Despite the defeat, Bertie had strong showings from Zymiere Dempsey, who scored 17 points along with five steals, and Tequan Holley, who scored nine points along with five blocks and two steals. Dempsey is absolutely dominating the steal category: he's posted at least two every time he's taken the court this season. Tayvien Ward was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Washington County pushed their record up to 12-0 with that win, which was their seventh straight on the road. As for Bertie, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-2.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Washington County will face off against Tarboro at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Tarboro will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 500th, while Washington County is ranked 100th). As for Bertie, they won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Hertford County at 6:00 p.m. on January 20th. That game will pit two of the most dominant guards against one another: Shimere Garris and Dempsey.
