Mt. Blue dropped their record down to 10-5 on Friday, which also ended the team's six-game streak of wins. They fell 5-2 to the Messalonskee Eagles. The Cougars were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Eagles earlier this season, when they won 8-1.
Nolan Leso was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over six innings while giving up five earned runs off six hits. What's more, he gave up only two walks, the fewest he's had since May 1st. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games he's played.
In other batting news, Dane Cousineau was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI.
As for Messalonskee, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 8-6. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.0 runs over those games.
Like Mt. Blue, Messalonskee also got a great game from a two-way player: Dennis Martin. On the mound, he pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits. Martin has become a key player for Messalonskee: the team is undefeated when he allows at most two earned runs, but 5-6 otherwise. Martin was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Martin wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Sean Achorn, who went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and one RBI. Messalonskee is undefeated when Achorn posts two or more stolen bases, but 5-6 otherwise.
Coming up, Mt. Blue will face off against Lawrence at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The last four games the Bulldogs have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one. As for Messalonskee, they will take on Skowhegan at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
