3A District 5 recap Oct. 23, 2012
Clearwater Central Catholic extended the longest winning streak in 3A District 5 this week by beating Berkeley Prep, 35-21. The victory was the sixth in a row for the Marauders.
St. Petersburg Catholic took down Montverde Academy 42-9 last week, the largest margin of any game. Jack Sheehan threw for 131 yards and two touchdowns and ran for three yards in the win.
The Buccaneers' dynamic duo of Brad Mayes and Bubba Olivera proved tough for Clearwater Central Catholic to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Mayes threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns and Olivera had 126 yards receiving. Jacob Mathis helped Berkeley Prep's passing attack out by catching six balls for 88 yards.
Diquan Walker was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 179 yards on 12 carries as John Davis' team lost to John Davis' team. Domenic James also contributed to the rushing game with 46 yards on the ground.
Berkeley Prep's offense has been unstoppable this season and the Buccaneers feature the season leaders in passing, rushing and receiving yards. Mayes has thrown for 1031 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, while Olivera has 21 catches for 567 yards. Chris Williams leads the league in rushing with 900 yards.
Williams of the Dominick Ciao's team is only 100 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season.
The Buccaneers made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 3,421 from 3,544. They were able to move up in the ranks after a 35-21 victory over Berkeley Prep last week.
