After a string of three wins, the Monroe Golden Tornadoes's good fortune finally ran out on Tuesday. They took a 55-48 hit to the loss column at the hands of Crisp County. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Monroe came into the game with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 16th, while the Cougars are ranked 320th).
Monroe lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Justin Burns, who scored eight points along with four blocks. Burns has been hot recently, having posted two or more blocks the last 11 times he's played. Another player making a difference was Zyon Robinson, who scored eight points along with two steals.
Leading Crisp County to victory were Zakariyya Dwight and Jaylon Cooper. Dwight scored 15 points along with seven rebounds and six blocks, while Cooper scored 22 points. Dwight has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last three times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Cayden Lofton, who scored six points.
Monroe's loss dropped their record down to 17-4. As for Crisp County, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-11.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Monroe will square off against the Trojans at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Dougherty will be looking to keep their three-game home win streak alive. As for Crisp County, they will head out on the road to challenge the Tigers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Carver's favor is that they have posted big point totals in their last 18 contests.
