Hermon is 8-2 against Mount Desert Island since May of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Hawks will welcome the Trojans at 4:30 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Hermon comes in on four and Mount Desert Island on three.
On Thursday, Hermon narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Old Town 3-2. Those three runs were actually the fewest the Hawks have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
Braelyn Wilcox made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out nine over five innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one run and one double. That double was her first of the season.
Wilcox wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Kenzie Gallant, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
While Mount Desert Island didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-10), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They put the hurt on Caribou with a sharp 13-3 victory on Monday. Considering the Trojans have won four matches by more than five runs this season, Monday's blowout was nothing new.
Like Hermon, Mount Desert Island also got a great game from a two-way player: Ella Watson. She struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits (and not a single walk). Watson was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Taylor Grant, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Genivieve Lapointe, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
Mount Desert Island always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .600. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in four consecutive contests.
Mount Desert Island's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-2. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.3 runs over those games. As for Hermon, their win bumped their record up to 5-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Tuesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Hermon has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 10 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Mount Desert Island struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.9 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Hermon was able to grind out a solid victory over Mount Desert Island in their previous meeting last Monday, winning 5-0. Will the Hawks repeat their success, or do the Trojans have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
