Already the winner of numerous MVP awards, it shouldn't be any surprise that Stanley Johnson of Mater Dei is the MaxPreps California Boys Basketball State Player of the Year for the 2013-14 season.
Winner of the
MaxPreps National Player of the Year award, Johnson has also been named the top player in Southern California by the Los Angeles Times, the top player in the Southern Section Open Division by the coaches association and the best player in Orange County by the Orange County Register.
He is joined on the honor squad by Mater Dei head coach Gary McKnight, who is the MaxPreps California Coach of the Year. McKnight was also
named the National Coach of the Year by MaxPreps after leading the Monarchs to a No. 1 national ranking and a fourth-straight state championship.
The MaxPreps teams are divided into five divisions based on the California state enrollment divisions. Those teams playing in the Open Division of the state tournament were placed in a division based on their enrollment. Those schools that played in the Southern Section Open Division were placed in the division they played in during the state playoffs.
A first, second and third team was chosen for the overall all-state team with 15 players listed as honorable mention (in no particular order). A first and second team were chosen for each division. The overall all-state teams included two guards, two forwards and a center. The divisional teams did not necessarily follow that format.
The division MVPs included Johnson for Division I, Daniel Hamilton of St. John Bosco for Division II, Ivan Rabb of Bishop O'Dowd for Division III, Aaron Holiday of Campbell Hall for Division IV and D.J. Wilson of Capital Christian for Division V.
