The Millbrook Wildcats will square off against the Laney Buccaneers on Friday. Millbrook is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.8 runs per game this season.
Millbrook is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Heritage with a sharp 8-2 win. The Wildcats haven't had any issues with the Huskies recently, as the game was their third consecutive victory against them.
Connor Wright made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off five hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Wright wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Smith Dickinson, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Finn Clougherty was another, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Laney came tearing into Tuesday's match with 15 straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 4.5 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 7-2 win over the Tigers.
TJ Ziermann spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on two hits and racked up ten Ks.
On the hitting side, Carston Wedemeyer was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Jack Holliman also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.
Laney's victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 20-4. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games. As for Millbrook, their record now sits at 19-9.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Friday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Millbrook has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Laney struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 9.6 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
