Crownpoint has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will face off against the Newcomb Skyhawks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Crownpoint has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
Last Wednesday, Crownpoint came up short against Zuni and fell 47-37. Crownpoint has struggled against Zuni recently, as their match on Wednesday was their third consecutive lost matchup.
Meanwhile, Newcomb's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their third straight loss. They took a serious blow against Tohatchi, falling 62-31. While losing is never fun, Newcomb can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked 93rd, while Tohatchi is ranked 17th).
Despite the loss, Newcomb got a solid performance out of Nevaeh Miller, who scored 13 points along with eight rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Miller has scored all season. Lethia Yazzie was another key contributor, scoring four points along with five steals.
Crownpoint's loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 6-8. That rough patch could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 29.0 points per game. As for Newcomb, they now have a losing record at 8-9.
Crownpoint skirted past Newcomb 40-38 in their previous meeting back in February of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for Crownpoint since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
