The Athens Wildcats scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Wednesday. They walked away with a 71-58 win over Sayre. Given Athens' advantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 200th, while Sayre is ranked 409th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Connor Mosher was his usual excellent self, scoring 26 points along with seven rebounds. That makes it eight consecutive games in which he has scored at least 25% of Athens' points. Another player making a difference was Nick Robbins, who scored 12 points along with six rebounds.
Athens pushed their record up to 6-2 with that win, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.9 points per game. As for Sayre, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-4.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Athens won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Waverly at 7:30 p.m. on December 28th. Waverly has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 218 points over their last three contests. As for Sayre, they will be playing at home against North Penn-Liberty at 7:00 p.m. on January 5, 2024.
