The Chieftains walked away with a 75-66 victory over the Bryan Bears on Friday for which the team can thank Matthews, who almost dropped a double-double with 21 points and nine boards. He has become a key player for Bellevue East: the team is 2-1 when he posts at least 15 points, but 1-14 otherwise.
Despite the loss, Bryan still got an impressive performance from Jayden Joseph, who went 8-for-16 on his way to 21 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Caden Garrett, who posted 11 points and six rebounds.
The win was their first on the road, bumping their record up to 3-15. As for Bryan, their record now sits at 0-18.
Coming up, Bellevue East will face off against Omaha Central at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
