The biggest upset of the week belonged to South El Monte, who took down 548th ranked Arroyo, 13-7. Mario Burciaga threw for nine yards, ran for 72 yards and caught two passes for 27 yards in the win.
Gabrielino moved up to 612 from 678 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in Mission Valley. The Eagles climbed the ranks as a result of beating Rosemead 13-7.
El Monte's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Brandon Martinez threw for 194 and two touchdowns and Abel Barrajas had 99 yards receiving. On the ground Angel Gonzalez chipped in 150 yards. Adolfo Sanchez helped El Monte's passing attack out by catching four balls for 51 yards.
The Lions' Martinez and Barrajas have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Martinez has thrown for 2848 yards this season, while Barrajas, a 5-foot-11 receiver, has 47 catches for 878 yards. Peter Aholoka from the Knights leads the league in rushing with 746 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Gabrielino takes on second place El Monte. Last week, Gabrielino bested the Panthers, while El Monte topped Mountain View.
Two of the top units in Mission Valley will face off this week when Joel Sanchez's team takes on Harold Sanin's team. The Lions' offense has racked up 336 points this season, earning them the top spot in the league, while the Eagles have allowed only 74 on the year.
There should be lots of points scored when Gabrielino and El Monte face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, the Eagles comes in having scored 203 this season, while the Lions have scored 336. Gabrielino scored 13 points last week as it topped Rosemead.
El Monte extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating the Vikings, 38-20. The victory was the fourth in a row for the Lions.
