Basketball Recap: Davenport Cox and Jack Sparks Secure Win for Mays

Mays won the last time they faced Drew and things went their way on Friday too. The Mays Raiders walked away with a 72-61 victory over Drew. Given the Raiders' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 67th, while Drew are ranked 234th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Mays was led to victory by Jack Sparks and Davenport Cox. Sparks dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 assists, while Cox went 9 for 20 en route to 24 points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals. Cox is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 19 or more in the last 12 games he's played. Clayton Coppock was another key player, putting up nine points and five steals.

Mays smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in five consecutive matchups.

When it comes to explaining why Drew lost, don't look at Juelz Scott. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten boards. Scott is trending in the right direction considering he's improved his point production for three straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Joseph Pressil, who posted nine points along with five assists and five steals.

Mays has been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-7 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 74.6 points per game. As for Drew, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-11.

Mays didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 67-63 win against Sandy Creek on the 20th. As for Drew, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 64-62 victory against Mundy's Mill on the 18th.
