Cheyenne Mountain is 2-7 against Lutheran since September of 2022 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Red-Tailed Hawks will venture away from home to take on the Lions at 6:00 p.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
On Tuesday, Cheyenne Mountain got the win against Air Academy by a conclusive 3-0. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Red-Tailed Hawks.
While Cheyenne Mountain won a shutout, things came down to the wire in the second set they played. The match finished with set scores of 25-20, 26-24, 25-16.
Cheyenne Mountain can attribute much of their success to Sophia Evans, who had seven digs and seven assists.
Cheyenne Mountain was lethal from the service line and finished the match with ten aces. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Air Academy only served five.
Meanwhile, Lutheran made easy work of Discovery Canyon on Tuesday and carried off a 3-0 win. The Lions haven't had any issues with the Thunder recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive victory against them.
Lutheran walked away with the win (and looked especially good in the first set). Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-14, 25-19, 25-17.
Cheyenne Mountain better keep an eye on Madeline Miller. She was instrumental in Lutheran's win, getting 14 digs and four aces. That's the most digs Miller has posted since back in September.
Cheyenne Mountain's record now sits at 10-6. As for Lutheran, their record is now 13-3.
Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's matchup: Cheyenne Mountain has really dialed in their serving this season, having averaged 8.9 aces per game. However, it's not like Lutheran struggles in that department as they've been averaging 6.3 aces. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Cheyenne Mountain suffered a grim 3-0 defeat to Lutheran when the teams last played back in September. Can the Red-Tailed Hawks avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
