Baseball Game Preview: South Mecklenburg Sabres vs. Marvin Ridge Mavericks

The South Mecklenburg Sabres will challenge the Marvin Ridge Mavericks at 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams are strolling into their matchups after big wins in their previous games.

On Tuesday, South Mecklenburg made easy work of Berry and carried off a 14-4 victory. Considering the Sabres have won three games by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Christian Gregg made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, pitching four innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. Gregg was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run.

In other batting news, Michael Gamble was a standout: he scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of his plate appearances. He has become a key player for South Mecklenburg: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 1-3 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Pete Halstead, who scored two runs and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-3.

South Mecklenburg hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Marvin Ridge, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Thursday. They never let Hickory Ridge get on the board and left with a 10-0 win on Tuesday. That ten run margin sets a new team best for the Mavericks this season.

South Mecklenburg has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.2 runs on average over those games. Marvin Ridge pushed their record up to 4-1 with the victory, which was their third straight at home.

Everything went South Mecklenburg's way against Marvin Ridge in their previous meeting back in March of 2023, as South Mecklenburg made off with a 9-1 win. Does South Mecklenburg have another victory up their sleeve, or will Marvin Ridge turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
