1. Martavious and Janoris star in the Muckious: In a battle of 9-0 teams, Martavious Odoms returned a fumble 32 yards for a score and Janoris Jenkins ran for three touchdowns as Florida's OTHER powerhouse, Pahokee rolled in the Muck, 34-24, over Glades Central (Belle Glade) in the annual Muck Bowl. Pahokee, ranked seventh nationally by USA Today and No. 3 in Florida by MaxPreps, won its second straight Muck Bowl for the first time. Here's a superb report from Palm Beach Post reporter Andrew Abramson who last week we featured for his sideline toughness.
2. Columbine can't be stopped: Jeff Cicchinelli and Orenzo Davis each rushed for 100 yards and the defense set up two scores as Columbine (Littleton, Colo.) rolled to its 24th consecutive victory with a 35-14 Class 5A quarterfinal win over rival Pomona. The defending state champion football team continues to help Columbine distance itself from one of the country's most horrific tragedies.
3. Sprechen de Sack: With the aid of four German-born players, Kimball Union Academy (Meriden, N.H.) is 8-0 and outscored foes 289-54. Among them is 6-foot-3, 240-pound junior Kasim Edeball, who leads the team in sacks with seven.
4. Coach Carter in the middle: Speaking of muck, in the North Coast Section of Northern California, participating coaches sometimes are asked for input in the selection process. With all the other coaches present! See how one coach,
Berkeley's Alonzo Carter, found himself in a mucky/sticky situation in
Will McCulloch's story in the San Francisco Chronicle. Carter was asked to choose between
Foothill (
Pleasanton) and
Deer Valley (Antioch) for the final at-large spot. Yikes.
5. And then there was one: Only one MaxPreps Top-25 football team went down to defeat over the weekend as No. 25 and previously unbeaten Bowie (9-1) lost a 24-23 thriller to DeSoto. The win by DeSoto (8-2) shouldn't have come as a major surprise however. It was the Volunteers 10th straight loss to DeSoto.
