Spanish Fork is 8-2 against Maple Mountain since April of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Dons will head out to challenge the Eagles at 3:30 p.m. Spanish Fork is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.2 runs per game this season.
Spanish Fork is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Utah's top teams: Salem Hills, who was ranked first at the time (Spanish Fork was ranked 12th). The Dons came up short against the Skyhawks on Wednesday, falling 13-6. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Dons have suffered since March 17th.
Lia Higginson made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles. Another player making a difference was Sydney Worthen, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.
Meanwhile, Maple Mountain had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 13 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They were the clear victors by an 18-2 margin over the Vikings. Considering the Eagles have won nine contests by more than six runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Izzie Groneman was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and four RBI. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Daphnee Pagano, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs.
Maple Mountain lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now launched at least two home runs in four consecutive games.
Maple Mountain's win bumped their record up to 15-6. As for Spanish Fork, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-7.
Maple Mountain's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Tuesday. Spanish Fork has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Maple Mountain, though, as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.9 strikeouts. Will Spanish Fork keep running through batters, or will the Eagles buck the trend?
Spanish Fork skirted past Maple Mountain 7-6 when the teams last played back in March. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Dons since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
