Winning is just a little bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 11 to 3 on the offensive boards, a fact the Elk Grove Thundering Herd proved on Saturday. They walked away with a 54-45 win over Liberty Ranch. Given Elk Grove's advantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 469th, while Liberty Ranch is ranked 989th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Vinny Gonzales was his usual excellent self, scoring 25 points. The contest was his fourth in a row with at least ten points. Jeffrey Meyers was another key contributor, scoring 3 points along with 3 steals.
Liberty Ranch's loss came despite strong showings from Andrew Cadiz and Yousef Diab. Cadiz scored 16 points along with 3 steals, while Diab scored 16 points.
The win got Elk Grove back to even at 2-2. As for Liberty Ranch, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-5.
Elk Grove will be playing in front of their home fans against River City at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. River City knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past five matches -- so hopefully Elk Grove likes a good challenge. Liberty Ranch will be staying on the road on Tuesday to face off against Downey at 8:00 p.m. on December 5th. Downey is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
