The Kearns Cougars's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their third straight loss. They took a 55-43 hit to the loss column at the hands of Summit Academy. The defeat unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Kearns in their matchups with Summit Academy: they've now lost four in a row.
Despite the defeat, Kearns saw an underclassman step up: Mina Kinikini dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds. Those ten rebounds set a new season-high mark for her. Alisi Tofavaha was another key contributor, scoring four points.
Leading Summit Academy to victory were Kita Holmes and Avery Backus. Holmes went 6 for 10 from beyond the arc en route to 20 points and 2 assists, while Backus scored 23 points along with six steals. Backus is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Sierra Johnson, who scored six points along with seven rebounds.
Kearns' loss was their third straight on the road, which bumped their record down to 4-6. As for Summit Academy, the victory was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 7-4.
Coincidentally, both teams will both be playing South Summit the next time they take the court. Kearns will host South Summit at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, while Summit Academy will head out to face them at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
