The Lake Creek Lions will face off against the Dayton Broncos at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
As a matter of fact, Lake Creek put up the most points they have all season on Friday. They fell 42-31 to Montgomery. The Lions have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Lake Creek's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Zach Colwell, who threw for 251 yards and four TDs, and Juan Gonzalez, who picked up 111 receiving yards and a pair of scores.
Meanwhile, it was close, but on Friday Dayton sidestepped Nederland for a 61-59 victory. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Broncos have posted against the Bulldogs since September 2, 2016.
Lake Creek better focus on containing Denim Foster and Jerry Prieto Jr as the pair were huge in Dayton's win. Foster gained 272 total yards and four touchdowns, while Prieto Jr rushed for 54 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Foster is also crushing it when it comes to rushing yards: he's rushed for at least 108 every time he's taken the field this season.
Dayton was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 254 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 167 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.
Dayton didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Nathan Finn and Devorian Bradford. Finn also set a new season-high mark in total tackles with eight. Dayton got some further help from Colton Havard: he made 21 total tackles (3.0 for loss).
Dayton's victory bumped their record up to 4-1. As for Lake Creek, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-4.
Everything came up roses for Lake Creek against Dayton when the teams last played back in October of 2024, as the squad secured a 57-17 win. One of the biggest obstacles trying to stand in the way of that victory was the Broncos' Jaleel Kendrick, who rushed for 86 yards and one TD, and also picked up 33 receiving yards. Now that he won't be playing on Friday, will it be easier for the Lions to walk away with another win? There's only one way to find out.
