Kettle Moraine (Wales, Wis.) sophomore Co-op goalie Jenna Bales made a spectacular 50 saves, but it wasn't enough to keep top-ranked
Onalaska (Wis.) Co-op from posting a narrow 5-4 victory in the girls ice hockey state tournament semifinals. It was the longest game in Wisconsin girls tournament history, going four overtimes and lasting three hours and 25 minutes.
Bales was just one save short of tying the Wisconsin state tournament record and three short of tying what is believed to be the national record. She made 13 saves - including three at point-blank range in 26 seconds - during the third overtime alone.
Sophomore Theresa Knutson scored three goals and had one assist for the winners. Her third goal provided the winning margin with two minutes and 17 seconds left in the fourth overtime.
Onalaska had to settle for state runner-up honors, however, losing the title game to
Everest (Schofield, Wis.) Co-op by a 6-2 margin.
